The Black Company by Glen Cook

I got deja vu about fifty pages into this book until I read online Erikson's Malazan Empire novels were inspired by this series.  The Malazan books are some of the best written so it's high praise for Cook, but he deserves it.  His storytelling has a great mixture of magic, intrigue and the weird.  His demi-gods are as human as the rest of us and his mercenary company is full of antiheroes.

Cook has fewer described characters than Erikson so it was a bit easier to follow and faster to read, but nothing beats the Malazan books for detail.

I highly recommend this book and I will read the rest of the Black Company series.
