GLOBALFOUNDRIES Fab 2 ground breaking ceremony

Today, Global Foundries had its ground breaking ceremony for Fab 2 in Malta, NY. Not all GF employees got to go, but those of us in Albany did. We drove up to Malta and got on a shuttle bus to the site. They had a big tent up and there were a lot of politicians schmoozing.

They chose this Malta site in the Luther Forest tech park because the land was contaminated since they used to test rockets there. There is still a gantry up which is cool. The land is no good for houses, but will work just fine for a fab.

Here is a big hole. I think this hole is where the sub-fab will go.
Here I am lookin' hard in front of the hole:
They had a big ass air conditioned tent up for the event. It even had a carpeted floor:

I think these tricked out Lincolns are for the NY governor, Patterson. The security dudes did not instill fear:
Dudes were on the job. No rest for the weary eh?
The ceremony consisted of a bunch of speeches by GF's chairman, NY governor Patterson, Congressman Schumer, GF's CEO, Congressman Murphy, AMD's CEO and former NY governor Pataki.

People were milling around in the beginning:
Below is former NY governor, Pataki, schmoozing:
GF Chairman Hector Ruiz started the proceedings off:
GF gave NY governor Patterson a portrait:
The obligatory first shovel full of dirt:
It was pretty cool overall, but there were no refreshments, no cake and no snacks. Schumer also continuously referred to AMD even though there is a big ass sign saying Global Foundries. I cringed a bit inside whenever he said AMD. GF was spun off from AMD, but they're separate companies now. There wasn't much mention of the fat cash invested by Abu Dhabi, but today was all about NY and how NY is the place to be for high tech.

Every attendee got a commemorative plaque with a drawing by some local kid. It isn't too bad:

Once completed, The Globalfoundries Fab 2 plant in Malta, New York will stand as the most technologically advanced semiconductor manufacturing facility, or fab, in the world and the largest leading-edge semiconductor foundry in the entire United States. The construction and ramp-up phases for the new $4.2 billion facility are expected to take approximately three years to complete, with volume production expected in 2012. There are thousands of jobs to be spun out into Saratoga County from this chip plant. http://site-press.com/globalfoundries-jobs/ is a site I found that shows you what jobs are available in Malta at the plant so far.
